North side of the island is open sea (North Sea). Nice big waves with high tide. Nice shallow mini-lakes with low tide. Further northeast around the corner wave breakers every 400m. Further southwest wave breakers every 150m.

Spring: air 14°C, water 12°C. Summer: air 20°C, water 16°C. Fall: air 12°C, water 12°C. Winter: air 4°C, water 8°C. Season is year round in principal, but May to October is the best. Wetsuit is necessary, especially in spring and autumn. Winter can be really cold. In summer a shorty is sufficient.

From Leeuwarden get to Harlingen and take a boat to Vlieland. Here drive to the north end of the island. No cars allowed om Vlieland. Take the bus to the beach.
