Water

Type:
Chop, Small wave, Medium wave
Hazards:
Currents, Wave breaker
Quality:
Cloudy
Best Tide:
High tide, Low tide

The spot's water has a very own flair. It is deep everywhere, except the first 20m, when it's low tide. Then you also have long stonewalls in the water, every 300m one crosses the beach. So you have to be careful, when it's half low and half high tide, because the water above the stones is only a fem centimeters deep and you can't see them because they are not marked! If it's high tide, then you normally have waves from 1-3m, but they haven't got any clear direction. Most of them are running in the wind direction but because of the stone walls there are differences in the waves near to the coast.

Beach

Type:
Sand
Size:
Medium
Hazards:
Other
Beach Users:
June, July, August

The beach is about 60m wide and many kilometers long. There are 20-30 catamarans on the right hand side so you have to be careful there while launching the kite! There are small beach houses and there is a restaurant 50-100m from the launching area away. The sand is soft and sometimes there are small shells near to the water, so you could better go surfing with your wet shoes. There is enough space for launching the kite, be careful in summer with the crowds.

Weather

Spring:
Normal
Summer:
Shorty
Fall:
Normal
Winter:
Thick

The weather is very different on the island. The sun is shining very often, so in the summer you often have temperatures from 20-35°C. But it's also raining very often. But in any case, you need a wetsuit, because the water is only 8-18°C warm. You can go surfing here anytime in the year you want, but it's only very cold in winters.

Wind

Best Months:
March, April, May, September, October, November
Wind Type:
Frontal
Best Direction:
N, SW, NW
Main Direction:
SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW

Usually, in spring you have middle-strong winds from the West to the North. In summer there are winds from Southwest to Northeast. Never go there surfing with offshore winds, because there are also very fast streams depending on the tide, the wind and the waves. But then you can go surfing at the "Surfstrandje" in Nieuweschild.

Extra information

Rules
Zones

You have to launch the kite on the right-hand side after the yellow board which says "Ende Bewaakt Strand", which means end of the safe beach, because there aren't as many people as directly near to the restaurant and the entrance near to the road. But despite this, the lifeguards will see you if you are in big trouble and will help you with rescuing. You can wear what you want, but never go surfing there without a flotation vest, because it isn't really the easiest spot and there is stream in the water and you sometimes can't see it from the beach. So always check the water by going shortly a few meters in the water and you will see, whether it's fast or slow streaming on this day!

Nightlife

For a good time during the evening, you should go to De Koog, where many bars and some clubs are, the biggest being "De Toekomst", but this is only open during the summer vacation.
