The spot is behind a point break (left and right break). Beware! When the waves look small and nice near where you launch, they can get huge further down. Happens because the bigger waves turn into the bay. Waves can be very good for wave riding.

Beach

Nice sandy beach. Unfortunately, a lot of kelp on it at times, so you can get your lines caught. Quite a bit of space to launch. About 200m downwind, there is a barrier of rocks going out, but it's easy to stay away from it.

Weather

Winter:
Normal

Long wetsuits needed all year round - although people were seen in shorties some times. Air around 30°C in the summer, down to 15°C in the winter. The water is pretty cold, around 10-15°C in the summer and 13-17°C in the winter. The longer the South Easter (prevailing summer wind) blows, the colder the surface water gets. Doesn't matter much in summer though. Long wetsuit is necessary. Riding is possible all year round.

This spot doesn't work very often. It can happen, however, that when the wind is SW in Table View and is too weak, that the wind will come in at Melkbos. It's mostly trial and error. Beware when launching, don't keep your kite overhead. The wind is usually gusty on the beach, but it gets better on the water.

How to get there

Transport
Car
Access
Short walk

Take the R27 from Cape Town. The easiest is to follow the beach road starting at Dolphin Beach Hotel, Table View. Drive past Big Bay, follow the beach road for 10-15km. When you get into Melkbosstrand, turn left at the petrol station. Follow the road to the beach (about 500m). Turn right. Launch below the rocks, on the beach.
