Just sand, from smooth as glass to deep soft sand depending on wind and tides. Good to setup at the Blackpool end of the beach. If the tide is out or you're on your own you can pay 5P at the local center and they'll run you out to the water, help launch and stay at the side to watch/help/land and run you back in. Also you have use of their facilities to wash down equipment, use the toilet and shower.

Extra information
No wind powered vehicles are allowed on the beach currently, however the council has hinted that after this summer (September most likely) they will trial the use of buggies/boards on the beach. Guidelines and rules for this are still being discussed at this time.
Nightlife
Good nightlife and cheap hotels in Blackpool. Pretty ladies in St Annes and Lytham.
