Slight chop to large swells depending on wind speed and duration. During South to Southeast winds the kiting area is protected from most of the swell giving mostly smooth riding. It is protected by a jetty to the south. Waves are generally steep faced unless coming from a system far offshore. Winds from the North, East or South will produce waves sidshore to directly onshore. Waves can be from knee high to overhead, again depending on wind duration and speed.

The best kitesurfing will be from spring to late fall when the winds are from the East to Southeast. Air temps can be in the 90's°F during the summer with water temps in the 80's°F. A wetsuit would be necessary in the spring and fall when the air/water temps are cooler. The air temps will start out in the 60's-70's°F and water temps in the 60's°F and finish at about the same. Surfing is possible and done all year round.

Wind

March, April, June, July, September, October
Wind Type:

Best Direction:

Main Direction:

Southeast winds produce sideonshore riding, with East winds producing more onshore. From winter to spring the winds generally shift from Northeast to Southeast to South. During the summer the winds are generally Southeast to Southwest with Southeast being the best direction for this location. This gives you a sideonshore ride with a protected area behind a rock jetty to give some smoother water.

There is an airport in Wilmington and is about 20 minutes from the beach. You can rent a car there. Drive west to Wrightsville Beach. There are a couple of beach accesses at the south end of Wrightsville Beach. It's paid parking and fills up pretty fast during the tourist season.
