Water

Type:
Shallow, Flat, Chop
Hazards:
Swimmers, Ships, Wave breaker
Quality:
Cloudy
Best Tide:
High tide

Because of the tide water sports are only possible from 2 hours before high tide until 2.5 hours afterwards. Space is limited by the lane of the Elbe (about 300m away from shore) flowing into the North Sea and the swimmers in the swimmer zones. Often crowed in summer. Very packed on the water with onshore winds. With SE winds the wind comes over a sand spit which keeps away the waves for very flat water. A small dam, which is covered by high tide, separates the surf zone from the boat channel. On the other side of the sand spit there is an old harbor, where you should only kite if you are experienced enough, due to many iron obstacles and walls.

Beach

Type:
Sand
Size:
Tidal
Hazards:
Bystanders
Beach Users:
July, August

Sandy beach. The size depends on the tide.

Weather

Spring:
Normal
Summer:
Shorty, Normal
Fall:
Normal
Winter:
Thick

Air 20-30°C in August, water about 18°C. Season starts in April and ends in October. Off-season kiting possible but rather rare in water around 2°C and air around 2-5°C. Wetsuit always needed.

Wind

Best Months:
March, April, May, September, October, November
Wind Type:
Frontal
Best Direction:
N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE
Main Direction:
SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW

Good for North to East. Western wind are `offshore` because they point into the Elbe lane for big ships. With some huge ships the wind might vanish for some minutes. Avoid onshore winds, the spot will be too small. Works best in N, NE, E and SE.

How to get there

Transport
Car
Access
Long walk

The beach is at the far Northeast end of Cuxhaven's beaches. You can't miss it. There is a weird-looking black structure erected there (the "Kugelbake"). A 27 to Cuxhaven. Follow the signs in the direction of "Kurgebiete" or "Duhnen/Doese". "Kugelbake-Halle" is the actual place you want to go. There is a big parking spot that is frequently used by caravans. Park there and take your stuff past the "Fort Kugelbake" to the far northeastern end of the beaches. During the season you will have to pay 2.50 Euro to get to the beach. Free parking. Walk for about 300m to the surf zone.

Extra information

Rules
Zones, Time, Fees

Kitesurfing allowed all year, but only 5 hours before and 3 hours after high tide. Watch for swimmers in the water! One accident might lead to a ban. Do not go out in West or Northwest winds, since you might be dragged into the ships lane over the dam, which is under the water surface. Crossing the dam into the ship lane is very dangerous and strongly forbidden!
