Best wind is 3 days before any cold front, and 2 days after a cold front. This means kiting is possible almost every weekend in winter. Summer receives early morning wind which dies by about 10:30am. Still allows a couple of hours kiting if you arrive early. In summer, only early morning is consistent or winds become gusty with potential whirlwinds. NE is best direction.

How to get there

Access
Short walk

Travel on the N1 towards Bloemfontein from Johannesburg. About 40 km's after the second tollgate, take the Koppies offramp. The town is about 20 km's from there. The dam is a further 20 km's away, if you follow the signboards. There are two sides to the dam, so use either depending on wind direction to ensure are not kiting in offshore.
