Flat, shallow, crystal clear. High tides are spectacular 1.5 miles square of flat shallow water, about 2ft deep. Tide comes in slowly.

Plenty of beach. Fairly soft sand in places, some good hard areas for land kiting. Quiet with very few people.

Water rarely below 7°C, wetsuit advised although on very hot days it is not necessary. Season good April to October. There is excellent surf most of the year. Rarely gets very cold, maximum temperature of air is around 23°C. Can rain a lot in winter. Average water temperature of 10°C.

Nearly always windy. SW or westerlies are common. Northerlies feel cold but can be strong. Most beaches are North facing. Average wind speed 12 knots, in winter this is nearer 30 knots. Very rare to have no wind at all. Winds strong in winter and can be wet. Wind average 3-6 Bft. Works best on W or NW.

Drive 36 miles from the airport. Head for west coast on A858 and in Garrynahine take the B8011 to Uig. Follow this road for 25 min and you will see the bay. Continue until you see signs for Ardroil Sands. Take that road and park near toilet block. There are buses but to hire a car/van is the best. The West coast is covered with excellent beaches.

Avoid Sundays as the locals observe them religiously, although few will complain. Respect individuals and avoid the entrance to the Salmon river.
