Avoid high tide because the water comes up to the trees. The sandy beach gets pretty big at low tide especially at the north or south end of the island. You have to hike to get to either end. Crowds are usually not to bad if you are willing to hike and the rangers are cool.

Follow the signs to Hunting Island State Park once you get into Beaufort SC. Follow Hwy 21 until onto the island, turn left into the state park beach which is the first left after the campground. It is best to hike to the north or south end to get a more open beach.
