Water

Type:
Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave
Hazards:
Currents, Wave breaker
Quality:
Dirty
Best Tide:
Low tide

Probably rather dirty because just next to Elbe lane. Mud is smelly. Tidal spot. If water at Kugelbake gets too shallow you can move on to this spot. Therefore: rideable from 3 hours before low tide until 3 hours afterwards. (During hide tide the water possible but deep!). If you are lucky nice sets of 1-2m waves roll in. Otherwise rather choppy. During low tide water gets very shallow. Then only a narrow strip can be used. Overall the spot will be crowed if there are 5-10 kiters, depending on the water level. On low tide you can walk for about 250m to the water, but only in NE and E winds. But be careful with the strong current and the close by fairway. Never go out alone! Close to shore rocky wave breakers which are under the surface on high tide.

Beach

Type:
Grass
Size:
None
Hazards:
Concrete
Beach Users:
No information

No beach. Pump up your gear on the dyke. If there are tourists around, launch your kite with a partner in the water! Slippery access on low tide via the ramp. Can be dangerous and only recommended to expert riders. Intermediate should launch from the water. Lots of obstacles on shore.

Weather

Spring:
Normal
Summer:
Shorty, Normal
Fall:
Normal
Winter:
Thick

Air 20-30°C in August, water about 18°C. Season starts in April and ends in October. Off-season kiting possible but rather rare in water around 2°C and air around 2-5°C. Wetsuit always needed.

Wind

Best Months:
No information
Wind Type:
Frontal
Best Direction:
N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE
Main Direction:
SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW

Because the spot is a bay labels onshore or sideonshore can't be determined consequently. If the wind is too onshore, just move further down the bay and it will get more sideshore. Works in N, NE, E and SE.

How to get there

Transport
Car
Access
No walk

Just next to Fort Kugelbake. The beach is at the far Northeast end of Cuxhaven's beaches. You can't miss it. There is a weird-looking black structure erected there (the "Kugelbake"). A 27 to Cuxhaven. Follow the signs in the direction of "Kurgebiete" or "Duhnen/Doese". "Kugelbake-Halle" is the actual place you want to go. There is a big parking spot that is frequently used by caravans. Park there and take your stuff past the "Fort Kugelbake" to the far northeastern end of the beaches. Alternative: there is a parking spot next to the habour "Alte Liebe" on the other side of the bay. There you can park right by the water. Drive over the dyke and after it take the first left and drive 100m and park for free.

Rules
Zones, Time

Kitesurfing allowed all year, but only 5 hours before and 3 hours after high tide. This is no beginner's spot! Remember: no beach, but a stone rampart. Even if shallow, the mud is very soft. You will sink in to your ankles. Stay away from any boats! Stay away from the lane of the river Elbe that runs into the north sea just behind you. Legal situation: kiting is not explicitly forbidden, but also not explicitly allowed. So be extremely careful. One accident will lead to a ban. For sure!
