Onshore wind brings in rollers. Water gets deeper than wading depth fairly quickly. There are currents in the area and the port police advises to be careful. The undertow from the waves make it hard to walk out under control.

Fly to Chania on Crete and get a bus to Rethymno, or fly to Athens and get a boat. The best beach in the area is a few hundred yards east of the ferry port, marked 'municipal beach'.
