The most usual is the East, not always strong but good, and when we get a cold front or hurricane close by you will have great winds so check out the weather a few days ahead and come on over. We have a wind pattern where you get a few days with good sideshore winds then it will switch East, then you go to the waves. It stays there a couple of days and then switches South and if it is strong it means you will have good winds from the North which we call Brisote or Norte depending on the direction and strength. So all you have to do is wait for the proper conditions. East winds (onshore) are the best for this place, but the waves are worth it. East is the dominant wind direction and the preferable time is between February (carnival!) to May.

There is a brand new route from Miami to Cozumel depending on the day of the week otherwise you go through the hassle of the connection to Cancun or from Mexico City to Cancun. From there you take the bus to Playa del Carmen, you can get your ticket at the airport and it is a 45min to 1 hour ride from your bus station. You walk to the pier and take the ferry to Cozumel. Drive across the island to the east coast, and then just a bit north and you will find the nice beach.
