North of Coco Beach is good for launching, since there are many people to help. The beach used to be bigger, but got smaller after the hurricane in 2002. Not the best place for beginners. The sand is white sand, not powder. Powder sand is found in Cancun. White sand is more coarse, like salt. The sand gets quite hot during the day. On real hot days you may need to wear sandals unless you walk along the water's edge. You will definitely need sun glasses for the glare off the white sand.
