Water

Type:
Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave
Hazards:
None
Quality:
Clean
Best Tide:
Tide independent

Big shallow area. No tide to speak of. Good learning spot. Waves are more of a chop with onshore winds. Not a big wave sight. No surfing unless it is blowing 25kts or more directly onshore for a few days. Since this is located on the shores of a shallow sound the waves never develop a lot of power and max out at 4'-5'.

Beach

Type:
Sand
Size:
Medium
Hazards:
Other
Beach Users:
None

The beach is relatively wide, soft sand. Occasional drift wood to lookout for when running your lines out. The beach is a few miles in either direction with very few people. The beach generally runs WNW-ESE.

Weather

Spring:
Shorty, Normal
Summer:
Shorts
Fall:
Shorty, Normal
Winter:
Normal

From early spring to late fall expect air temps 80-90°F and water temps 70-80°F. In the winter the air temps drop to around 40-50°F and water temps about the same. It is possible to kite all year round. The water is generally warm and shallow from early spring to late fall.

Wind

Best Months:
March, April, October, November
Wind Type:
Thermal, Frontal
Best Direction:
N, NE, NW
Main Direction:
SW

This area probably is best during the spring and fall when the wind will probably have some North in it. In the summer the predominate direction will be from the Southwest/East. These will mostly offshore the main beach but there are little coves and inlets that have yet to be explored that would allow kiting in these winds. Expect winds around 10-15 kts most days in the summer.

How to get there

Transport
Car
Access
Short walk

This area is only 40 miles South of Hatteras. If you are driving to Hatteras from the South you have to stop at Cedar Island and catch the ferry. This is the spot. Take Hwy 70 E. from Morehead City until you come to Hwy 12 at Atlantic. Follow the sign to the Cedar Island Ferry. There is a parking lot beside the ferry terminal. The beach is right there. If coming from the North you have probably already been kiting Hatteras. Head South, catch the ferry over to Ocracoke Island then catch the ferry there to Cedar Island. You'll get a good look at the beach as you arrive on Cedar Island. No airports/buses/trains anywhere near by. There is a campground/motel/restaurant within walking distance of the beach.
