The spot has a vast sandy beach stretching out to sea with many sandbars, and since the water is relatively shallow, the spot is suitable for novices. However, it tends get wavy in eastern winds which will also make Sønderstand fun for more experienced kiters as well.

Optimally, Sønderstand does it best in eastern wind directions, but it also works fine with wind coming from the south.

In the bottom of Aabenraa Fjord/Bay you will find an exquisite spot for cruising on water. Park your car either along the beach, uptown, or by the café “Under Sejlet” in the bay’s north end. The café offers a cozy place to eat, restrooms, and direct access to Aabenraa town. By the café hangs a defibrillator, on the beach is an emergency triangle and with an amazing view overlooking the bay, land on three sides, and plenty of activity on the beach and the surrounding streets in general, this spot will feel safe to most kiters.
Extra information
Since the beach is a popular excursion spot during summer, surfing is allowed outside the red buoys surrounding the north end of the beach which means you may have to walk a little with your gear. Overall, you should be aware of other users in the water and on the beach when kiting at Sønderstrand, however, it is easy for accompanying non-kiters to find something to do in the surrounding area, and off-season you will have more than plenty of space.
