Flat to really big waves, depending on the conditions. The beach break can also get quiet big. Look out for pilings in the water near the Life Guards headquarters ("the pier"), since a storm destroyed a pier here. Ask locals for the exact location, but all along this "North Strip" is good, so just look for the kites on windy days.

North of Daytona you will find Ormond-By-The-Sea. It has many accesses to the beach. A nice access with parking and facilities is the Tom Rennick Park. During spring and summer it gets more crowded, then drive further north. You can also drive onto the beach and park on the beach.
